Bitches Brew Revisited— 50 Years of Jazz Fusion

Join the Frost Sextet and the Frost Concert Jazz Band as they revisit music from Miles Davis’ audacious Bitches Brew, released in 1970, reimagined in new arrangements by saxophonist Charles Pillow. As part of his residency at Frost, NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Dave Liebman, a Miles Davis sideman, performs with both Frost groups. Also featuring directors Chuck Bergeron and John Daversa, and pianists Shelly Berg and Martin Bejerano.

Bang on a Bassoon

No, you’ve never heard the bassoon sound quite like this before. Frost faculty artist and bassoonist Gabriel Beavers and Frost dean and pianist Shelly Berg call on their superior technique and varied experiences for Gernot Wolfgang’s and James Lassen’s challenging works, in which the bassoon is treated like a rock guitar. Brett Dietz’s Behold a Pale Horse for amplified bassoon and percussion quartet puts the bassoon through a guitar pedal effects; and Theodor Burkali’s TRaInspOrt is a fiery piece for bassoon and 2 percussion. Also featuring percussionists Andrew Riley and Matthew Nichols, and Hamiruge (LSU Percussion Ensemble).

Lieder-Spirituals-Jazz

In honor of Black History Month, Frost voice faculty artists Jeanette Thompson and Robynne Redmon join Frost pianists Shelly Berg and Alan Johnson in a voice recital, which will include honoring the history and evolution of the Spiritual. A product of the introduction of Christianity into slaves’ lives, Spirituals also became a coded means of communicating resistance and escape. In time, Spirituals became a formative piece in the development of jazz and blues and has remained a source of inspiration to many jazz artists today.

Valerie Coleman and Friends

In her concert debut as assistant professor of performance, chamber music and entrepreneurship at the Frost School of Music, Grammy-nominated flutist-composer Valerie Coleman is showcased in an evening of poetry by Margaret Danner, Maya Angelou, and Langston Hughes, visual art by Sonya Clark, and her own original chamber music. Featured performers include Valerie Coleman, mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran, pianist-composer Amanda Harberg, clarinetist Margaret Donaghue, percussionist Svet Stoyanov, and pianist Shelly Berg.

Pre-Concert Discussion: Musicology Professor Dr. Melvin Butler leads a 30-minute pre-concert discussion at 6:30pm.

VSO benefit - 4th Annual Evening of Jazz

Celebrated jazz clarinetist and saxophonist Ken Peplowski returns with a illustrious quartet - Gary Hobbs, drums; Dave Captain, bass; and Shelly Berg, piano - for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s 4th Annual Evening of Jazz live benefit concert and dinner at 5:30 pm on Sunday, March 24th at Warehouse 23 on the Vancouver waterfront which will be transformed into the “Moulin Rouge.”
Tickets are $100, which include two complimentary tickets to the VSO April 13/14 Young Artists Concert. Concert Steinway piano generously provided by Michelle’s Pianos. Proceeds from this event benefit The VSO’s Education Initiative, focusing on extensive music education outreach programs that serve to empower students, educators and adults in the community.

Thomas’ orchestral suite, “New York Variations” was recorded at the 20th Century Fox Studios with the Hollywood Studio Orchestra, and his moving ballet, “The Legend of Bird Mountain” was recorded by the Prague Symphony Orchestra.

The honorees represent two historic firsts for the prize – the first time it has been awarded to a married couple or to musicians-songwriters of Hispanic descent.
